Research Notes on How to Break Up with Your Psychiatrist
It is not always easy to know how to break up with your psychologist. Common reasons that people choose to end their therapy include: the therapy goals have been accomplished, the client feels that they no longer need therapy, the therapist does not meet the needs of the client, or for financial reasons.1 Some clients may need only a few sessions, while others benefit from long-term therapy.2
Fast Facts:
- It is best if the therapist is notified of the discontinuation of therapy a month in advance.1
- It may help to gradually terminate therapy by going less frequently, rather than ending abruptly.2
- Clients may feel conflicting emotions when discontinuing therapy.2
