Research Notes on How to Avoid Swine Flu
Swine flu prevention means prevention while around pigs, and preventing human-to-human transmission and spread.1 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends avoiding human-to-human transmission by washing hands frequently, avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and staying home when you feel sick.2 Prevention while around pigs includes cleaning and maintaining the facility, not adding new pigs to the herd who have influenza, and swine flu vaccines.1
Fast Facts:
- Swine flu is transmitted through coughing, sneezing, or touching an affected surface or object and then touching eyes, nose or mouth.1
- Swine flu can not be spread through pork products.1
- Swine flu is the most contagious for five to ten days.1
