Research Notes on How to Avoid H1N1 Flu
The H1N1 flu, also known as swine flu, is a respiratory illness similar to seasonal influenza.1 Washing your hands thoroughly using soap and water is the number one prevention to help avoid the H1N1 flu virus. Keeping your hands away from your face, covering your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing, avoiding sick individuals, and staying home when sick are the best ways to prevent contracting and spreading the flu.2
Fast Facts:
- The CDC announced the H1N1 virus is contagious, but it is unknown exactly how easily it spreads from person to person.3
- Individuals diagnosed with influenza can be contagious from one day before development of symptoms up to seven days after contraction.3
- Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also recommended.2
- H1N1 is not transmitted through food.3
- H1N1 contains gene segments of human, swine, and avian origin.4
