Research Notes on How is Autism Diagnosed
A diagnosis of autism is based on several factors. Those factors can include the results of clinical observations and standardized tests.1 A pediatrician, neurologist, and speech-language pathologist may all help to diagnose autism in a child.2 Although the cause of autism is still unknown, there are an increasing number of children diagnosed yearly.
Fast Facts:
- Health care professionals use observation to check for behaviors that are indicative of autism such as repetitive use of words and repetitive motor movements.1
- For children that are mildly affected by autism, their symptoms may not be recognized as quickly.2
- Screenings and tests such as the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (CHAT) may be used as part of the process to diagnosis autism.1
