Psychotherapy, also known as simply therapy or talk therapy, is a technique used by mental health professionals to assist patients with mental illnesses.1 The therapist assists the patient in identifying the problem, facing the problem, and reaching a goal at the end of therapy.2 Psychotherapy may be combined with psychiatric medication to aid with treatment goals.3

  • The number of sessions required will depend on the individual's treatment plan. Research has shown that longevity of sessions increased success potential over short term therapy.6
  • Sessions vary according to particular disorder. For acute distress approximately 25 sessions. Chronic distress, approximately 50 sessions with a 70 percent response rate. Personality disorder, approximately 200 sessions with a 75 percent response rate.6
