Research Notes on How Long Does Psychotherapy Take
There is no set time frame for psychotherapy. Depending on the need for therapy sessions, a patient may spend weeks, months, or years in therapy. The more severe or complicated the mental illness or disorder, the longer the treatment period will be. Short-term therapy (usually 16 or fewer sessions) is often effective for treating specific symptoms.1

- Psychotherapy for conditions such as anxiety, stress, and impotence typically require shorter treatment periods.2
- Although your psychotherapist may make recommendations, it is up to you, the patient, how much time you spend in psychotherapy.3
