Research Notes on How Is Psoriasis Diagnosed

Currently there is no specific blood or diagnostic test that can diagnose psoriasis.1 Psoriasis is a skin disorder that affects approximately two to three percent of the world's population. The types of psoriasis include plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, erythrodermic psoriasis, and psoriatic arthritis.2

Fast Facts:

  • Rete pegs and Auspitz's sign are tests performed to help diagnose psoriasis.3
  • The Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI score) is used to determine whether the severity of psoriasis is mild (less than two percent of skin), moderate (covers three to ten percent of skin), or severe (more than ten percent of the body is affected).4
  • Seborrheic dermatitis, lichen planus, ringworm of the body, and pityriasis rosea are common skin disorders that can look like psoriasis.5
