Research Notes on How Diabetes Affects the Heart
Diabetes that is not controlled can cause heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and peripheral artery disease.1 High blood glucose damages nerves and blood vessels causing atherosclerosis.2 Heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of deaths associated with diabetes. 3 In 2006, diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.3
Fast Facts:
- Approximately 65 percent of diabetic patients eventually die from heart disease or stroke.4
- Keeping blood sugar under control, proper diet and exercise, cholesterol monitoring, and controlling blood pressure are ways to prevent heart complications associated with diabetes.5
- Vision loss, kidney failure, and lower extremity amputations are other health problems associated with diabetes.3
