Originally called "The Hospital for the Relief of the Ruptured and Crippled," was founded in 1863 by Dr. James A. Knight.1 So begins the story of this remarkable hospital that has done so much for people of every age, and race. The Hospital for Special Surgery is undoubtedly one of the best hospitals in the nation for joint replacement surgery.2
