Research Notes on Hospital Ranking
Hospital rankings consist of benchmarks to see how hospitals compare in performing routine procedures and conditions.1 Data is gathered and a statistical analysis results in a comparative ranking of hospitals and their performance. 1 Rankings may also include data on a hospital's ability to address particularly difficult cases as well. 1
Fast Facts:
- Typical data may include the number of procedures performed, deaths in the hospital related to those procedures, nurse-to-patient ratio, key technologies in use, etc.2
- Hospital rankings do not provide all the comprehensive information consumers need to know.2
- State agencies, Medicare, non-profit organizations, academic researchers and the media author hospital ranking reports.2
