Research Notes on Homemade Hotpack

Homemade hotpacks can be used instead of electric heating pads and blankets or hot water bottles for the treatment of aches and pains.1 The hotpacks are often called bed buddies, stress busters, magic bags, corn cozies, or rice bags among others.1 Hotpacks are heated in a microwave oven prior to use.1

Fast Facts:

  • Common fillings for hotpacks include wheat, uncooked rice, feed corn, buckwheat hulls, and barley beans.2
  • Adding herbs, spices and essential oils to the filling makes for a soothing and fragrant hotpack.2
  • Adding a cup of water inside the microwave while heating the hotpack adds moisture.2
