Research Notes on Home Pregnancy Tests
According to manufacturers, home pregnancy tests are about 99% accurate when performed correctly.1 The tests are available over the counter in most pharmacies. The tests are performed by placing urine on a test strip which monitors the amount of hCG in the body.1 hCG is released by the placenta as it begins to develop approximately ten days after conception.1
Fast Facts:
- To help ensure accuracy, read all test directions before beginning the test, test with first morning urine when possible and don't test too early.2
- Two studies suggest that the First Response, Early Result Pregnancy Test may be the most sensitive among common brands.2
- Some fertility medications can interfere with test results, so discuss when to test with your physician.2
