Research Notes on Holmium Laser Ablation of the Prostate

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), approximately 50% of men over age 60 can develop benign prostatic hyperlasia (BPH), and by the age of 70, this number is raised to 90%.1 People with BPH may experience voiding problems which can be adequately managed with medical therapy but they will continue to experience significant voiding problems over time and will require surgery to avoid future complications such as urinary retention, infections and stone formation. Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the standard surgical technique for BPH but recent advances in technology allowed the use of lasers for treatment of BPH. One such technique is holmium laser ablation of the prostate (HoLAP).2
