Research Notes on History of Statins
Research into statins began in 1971 in Japan by Akira Endo and Masao Kuroda.1 The pharmaceutical company Merck continued research and isolated the first statin, lovastatin, in 1978.2 This became the first commercially available statin when it was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1987.3 Lipitor (atorvastatin), a synthetic statin created in 1985, is now the largest selling drug in the world.4
Fast Facts:
- Statins work by blocking certain molecules in the body that prevent the liver from making cholesterol.5
- The most common statins are atorvastatin (Lipitor), fluvastatin (Lescol), lovastatin (Mevacor, Altocor), pravastatin (Pravachol), simvastatin (Zocor), and rosuvastatin (Crestor).6
- The discovery and widespread use of statins was listed on USA Today as one of the top 25 medical developments since 1982.7
