Research Notes on History of Health Insurance
The history of health insurance dates back as far as the second half of the 1800's. Voluntary mutual protection associations were developed, one of the first of these, La Societe Francaise de Bienfaisance Mutuelle, was organized in San Francisco in 1851. In 1934 California physicians created the first prepayment plan for physician services, a precursor to Blue Shield, open to employees earning less than $3000 a year at a cost of $1.70 a month.
