Research Notes on History of Handwashing and Infection
It was Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis who started the advocacy of hand washing to prevent the spread of diseases as was proven more than 100 years ago. He noticed that there was a high mortality rate in the ward that was being staffed by medical students who did not wash their hands prior to handling patients. He then asked them to observe proper hand hygiene and a marked decrease in the number of deaths occured afterwards.
