Research Notes on High Risk Pregnancy

While every pregnancy carries some form of risks, a high risk pregnancy means greater risks to both mother and fetus. The causes can be conditions which the mother already has, conditions that develop during the pregnancy, the number of babies, maternal age or a history of problematic pregnancies in the past.1 Some chronic conditions which may complicate a pregnancy are heart disease, hypertension, STDs, diabetes and cancer.1

Fast Facts:

  • Some physicians consider any pregnancy over the age of 30 as high risk.2
  • Regular prenatal visits and testing may reduce the chances of having a high-risk pregnancy.
  • Many physicians order a "triple screen" test to determine fetal abnormalities in high risk pregancies.3
