Research Notes on High Risk Group for Swine Flu


Pregnant women, parents and caretakers of young children, health care workers, adults over 65 years of age, and children younger than five are listed in the high risk group for swine flu.1 Individuals who have heart or lung disease, diabetes, and weakened immune systems are also listed on the high risk list.2 It is estimated that the swine flu vaccine may be available to the market in late October of 2009. Approximately 120 million swine flu vaccine doses will be available with nearly 160 million people in the high risk group.3

  • On July 29, 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended pregnant women, parents and caretakers of young children, health care workers, non-elderly adults with medical conditions, and individuals between the ages of six to 24 months to be the first line of recipients for the H1N1 influenza vaccine when available.3
  • The high risk group for swine flu is mirrored off the seasonal influenza group until further clinical data is available.1
  • Swine flu is an influenza type A virus.1
  • As of July 6, 2009, there were 94,512 confirmed cases in 122 countries, causing 429 deaths.4
