Research Notes on High Cholesterol and Statins
Statins are used in the treatment of high cholesterol. Taken alone or in combination with other cholesterol-lowering drugs, statins work by blocking an enzyme the body needs to produce cholesterol.1 Statins also lower the risk for stroke, heart attack, and death.2 Statins should be used as part of a regimen that includes a healthy diet and exercise.
Fast Facts:
- Side effects of using statins include fatigue, gas, and severe muscle pain.2
- Statins can reduce LDL cholesterol levels by 18% to 55%.1
- Statins may also lower the risk of having other diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease.2
