Research Notes on High Cholesterol and Pregnancy
When a woman has high cholesterol during pregnancy it can increase the risk of developing gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia.1 Women can lower cholesterol levels by taking extra vitamin C and E, eating healthy foods, exercising, and avoiding alcohol and cigarettes. High cholesterol can trigger a seizure which can threaten the life of the woman and the baby.2 Additionally, if a woman has high cholesterol during their pregnancy it can result in their child acquiring atherosclerosis later in life.2
Fast Facts:
- High cholesterol increases the chance of preterm delivery.3
- High cholesterol is more common in women who were overweight prior to their pregnancy.
- Your physician will monitor high cholesterol by administering a urine test to check for protein.
- Bed rest is a common treatment for pregnant women suffering from high cholesterol.
