Research Notes on High Cholesterol and Barley

Studies have shown that barley has positive results in lowering high cholesterol. Barley contains beta glucan, a dietary fiber that binds cholesterol to bile acids and helps excrete it through the body via feces.1 Originating in Ethiopia and Southeast Asia, barley has been cultivated and used for medicinal purposes for over ten thousand years.2 Bloating and flatulence are the most common side effects when consuming barley.3

Fast Facts:

  • A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition resulted in a six to eight percent reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol when three to six grams of beta-glucan soluble fiber was consumed.2
  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accepted the beta-glucan soluble fiber health claim. To qualify, the food product must contain at least 0.75 grams of barley beta-glucan soluble fiber per serving.2
  • Barley can be found in foods such as flakes, grits, flour, and meal.2
  • Barley is not recommended if diagnosed with celiac disease, sensitive to gluten, or if surgery is scheduled within a few weeks.4
