Research Notes on High Cholesterol Medication Types

Statins, bile acid sequestrants, nicotinic acid, fibrates, and cholesterol absorption inhibitors are the five major types of cholesterol medications.1 Cholesterol is an integral part of the body; it builds new cells, insulates nerves, and produces hormones. Exercise, weight control, healthy diet, and a healthy lifestyle are important in controlling high cholesterol.2 Consult a health care professional prior to discontinuing or changing dosage of a high cholesterol medication.

Fast Facts:

  • Statins are the most commonly prescribed medication for high cholesterol.1 They lower Low-Density Lipoproteins by blocking the production of cholesterol in the liver.2
  • Bile acid sequestrants prevent bile from being reabsorbed into the circulatory system depleting the cholesterol supply.2
  • Nicotinic acid is a form of vitamin B. It lowers levels of triglycerides and LDL, increasing HDL.3
  • Fibrates reduce triglycerides and increase HDL, the "good" cholesterol.3
  • Cholesterol absorption inhibitors lower cholesterol amounts by reducing the amount absorbed in the intestines.3
  • High cholesterol medications help treat symptoms but are not a cure.1
