Research Notes on High Blood Pressure in Children
High blood pressure in children can be the result of either poor lifestyle habits, or due to another medical condition.1 As they grow, what is considered normal blood pressure for children changes, which can lead to not being diagnosed.1 Children whose blood pressure is higher than 90%-95% of other children the same age and height, may have high blood pressure.2
Fast Facts:
- Risk factors for a child developing high blood pressure include a family history of high blood pressure, obesity, and high cholesterol.2
- Children with severe high blood pressure may be prescribed diuretics, beta blockers, or calcium channel blockers for treatment.1
- Your health care provider may first recommend lifestyle changes for your child to treat high blood pressure.
