Research Notes on High Blood Pressure and Fish Oil
Fish oil has been known to reduce high blood pressure in small amounts, as shown in human clinical trials.1 Omega-3 fish oil is found in dietary fish as well as in dietary supplements.2 Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid, which means it is not produced by the human body naturally, so it has to be consumed either by eating foods that contain it or by taking supplements.3 See the omega-3 WisdomCard for more information on the uses and benefits.
Fast Facts:
- Nausea, diarrhea, and breath that smells like fish are a few fish oil side effects.2
- Intake of higher doses omega-3 fish oil should be monitored closely by a doctor, as it can cause bleeding over time.1
- Foods that are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, tuna, sardines, walnuts, flaxseed oil, and more.4
- If taking omega-3 to lower blood pressure, no more than 3 grams per day should be taken per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.2
