Research Notes on High Blood Pressure Risk Factors
There are several known high blood pressure risk factors. Some risks such as being over weight, smoking, lack of physical activity, heavy drinking, high consumption of salt, and too little potassium or vitamin D in the diet are factors that are controllable. Other factors such as age, race, and a family history of high blood pressure are uncontrollable risk factors.1
Fast Facts:
- If you have prehypertension, you are at an increased risk of developing high blood pressure.2
- Some chronic health conditions such as high cholesterol, diabetes, kidney disease, and sleep apnea may increase the risk of developing high blood pressure.1
- More than half of all Americans aged 60 and over have high blood pressure.2
