Research Notes on Herpesviridae
The Herpesviridae are a large family of DNA viruses that cause diseases in animals, including humans. Herpes viruses all share a common structure—all herpesviruses are composed of relatively large double-stranded, linear DNA genomes encoding 100-200 genes encased within an icosahedral protein cage called the capsid which is itself wrapped in a lipid bilayer membrane called the envelope. - Herpesviridae is divided into three subfamilies, which includes Alphaherpesvirinae, Betaherpesvirinae, and Gammaherpesvirinae.1
- There are eight distinct viruses in this family known to cause disease in humans: herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, varicella-zoster virus, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, human herpesvirus 6, human herpesvirus 7, and Kaposi's sarcoma virus or human herpesvirus 8.2
- All Herpes viruses are nuclear-replicating.3
