Herpes simplex is a viral disease caused by Herpes simplex viruses (HSV type 1 and HSV type 2). HSV-1 (herpes labialis) was once defined almost exclusively as oral herpes and HSV-2 (herpes genitalis) as genital herpes. It is now accepted that the previous rule of thumb: "HSV-1 above the waist and HSV-2 below the waist" no longer applies due to several factors including the changing of sexual mores and the declining adolescent HSV-1 infection rate in developed nations.
