Research Notes on Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is a contagious disease caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and results in inflammation of the liver. There are two phases of this infection. Acute hepatitis B is the first phase that occurs shortly after being exposed. When the infection lasts six months or longer, it is considered chronic hepatitis B.1
Fast Facts:
- Hepatitis B is spread through contact with blood or other bodily fluids.2
- Symptoms of hepatitis B can be mild to severe and may include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine, and jaundice. Some people, however, do not experience symptoms.3
- In the United States, 1.25 million people are chronic carriers of HBV.1
