Hepatic Veno-Occlusive Disease

Research Notes on Hepatic Veno-Occlusive Disease

Hepatic veno-occlusive disease, also known as veno-occlusive disease (VOD), is a condition where some of the small veins in the liver are blocked as a result of high-dose chemotherapy given before a bone marrow transplant.1 It may also occur after the ingestion of certain plant alkaloids such as pyrrolizidine alkaloids found in some herbal teas.1

Fast Facts:

  • Hepatic veno-occlusive disease can happen at any age, although more common among those who are malnourished.2
  • Symptoms include and enlarged, tender liver and jaundice.2
  • Since there is no specific treatment, the cause for the blockage should be eliminated.2
