Research Notes on Heparin
Heparin is an anticoagulant medication which prevents the blood from clotting. It is used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and other conditions of blood clotting. It is also used before surgeries to reduce the possibility of blood clots from forming.1
Fast Facts:
- Heparin is given via injection.2
- In 2007, actor Dennis Quaid's twelve-day-old twins were mistakenly given an adult dosage, which is 1,000 times the recommended dosage for infant.3
- Contamination issues led to a 2008 recall by the Baxter Healthcare Corportaion. Multi-dose and single-dose vials of heparin sodium for injection, as well as HEP-LOCK heparin flush products were recalled.4
