Hemorrhoids, emerods, or piles are varicosities or swelling and inflammation of the veins in the rectum and anus. Increased straining during bowel movement by constipation or diarrhea may lead to hemorrhoids. Hypertension, particularly portal hypertension, can also cause hemorrhoids because of the connections between the portal vein and the vena cava which occur in the rectal wall; such case is known as portocaval anastomoses. Obesity, pregnancy, excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption, insufficient liquid intake, and vitamin E deficiency can also cause hemorrhoids. …read more from Wikipedia
