Research Notes on Hemophilia Type B
Haemophilia B is a blood clotting disorder caused by a mutation of the Factor IX gene, leading to a deficiency of Factor IX. It may be also known as factor IX deficiency, or Christmas disease. It is an inherited disorder, although 30% of cases may be the result of a spontaneous gene mutation. Hemophilia B affects about 3,300 individuals in the United States.1

- Symptoms may include excessive bleeding into muscle and urine, and may also cause bleeding into the brain.2
- Worldwide, hemophilia B occurs in approximately 1 in 20,000 newborn males.3
- Treatment is by intravenous infusion of factor IX.4
