Research Notes on Hemiplegic Migraine
Hemiplegic migraines are a severe form of a migraine with aura. A hemiplegic migraine imitates a stroke. The migraine may leave you with temporary paralysis that can last for days.1 Symptoms of a hemiplegic migraine include severe pain on one side of your head, nausea, and dizziness.2 The majority of people who have hemiplegic migraines inherited them from a parent who also had migraines.1
Fast Facts:
- Hemiplegic migraines not only mimic a stroke, but can be an indication that one has occurred.1
- Hemiplegic migraines typically begin in childhood. Most people outgrow them as they reach adulthood.2
- Your doctor may give you medicine to prevent the migraines, and to treat them.
