Research Notes on Hemiballismus
Hemiballismus is a movement disorder that is caused by a lesion or infarction in an area of the brain called the contralateral subthalamic nucleus.1 This disorder is characterized by violent, involuntary movements of the arm and leg on one side of the body.1 Hemiballismus may occur in people who have diabetes, hypertension, or TB meningitis.1
Fast Facts:
- Treated with diazepam and haloperidol.2
- Movements may cause trauma to the skin and joints.2
- Usually occurs in the upper limbs and in proximal joints.2
