Research Notes on Helping a Family Member With Depression
Nearly two thirds of people with depression do not seek treatment, so if you suspect depression in your family member, it is important to take steps to help them.1 Depression is a medical illness affecting a person’s mind and body. How a person feels, thinks, and acts is impacted.2 Signs of depression may include sadness or irritability, unable to concentrate, poor appetite, weight loss or weight gain, loss of energy or feelings of tiredness, and intense feelings of guilt and or worthlessness.3

- The most important thing you can do to help a depressed loved one is to get appropriate treatment and correct diagnosis.4
- Offer emotional support to your family member.4
- Educate yourself about the symptoms of the illness, and it's treatments.3
