Research Notes on Heavy Metal Toxicity Treatment

Chelation therapy is the most often prescribed treatment for lead, mercury, or arsenic poisoning. Chelation therapy is a process where ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is injected into the bloodstream. EDTA then attaches to the heavy metal and is flushed from the body.1 Thallium poisoning is treated by giving the patient a diuretic and potassium ferric hexacyanoferrate, commonly known as Prussian blue.2 Regardless of the heavy metal, if the poisoning is severe vomiting may be induced to rid the body immediately of the toxins.

Fast Facts:

  • Heavy metals can be breathed, ingested, or absorbed through the skin.3
  • There is currently no effective treatment for cadmium poisoning.3
  • Heavy metal poisoning contributes to genotoxicity which is the term used to describe an increased risk of cancer due to damaged DNA.4
