Research Notes on Heavy Metal Poisoning
Heavy metals are categorized as those elements with high (>5.0) relative density levels. Excessive amount of these elements may lead to toxic accumulation in the soft tissues of the body or commonly know as poisoning. Common heavy metals are lead, mercury, iron, cadmium, thallium, bismuth and arsenic. These metals can enter our body by ingestion, inhalation and absorption through the skin or mucous membranes. Symptoms depend on the nature and quantity of heavy metal ingested. Patients may complain of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, sweating, and a metallic taste in the mouth. Heavy metal poisoning is considered a medical emergency, and the patient should be taken to a hospital emergency room immediately.
