Heartburn, or acid indigestion, is the most common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).1 GERD, also called acid reflux, is a disease where the liquid contents of the stomach back up into the esophagus.2 While common and rarely life-threatening, GERD and heartburn can greatly reduce quality of life.3
Fast Facts:
- Heartburn is a burning pain in the lower part of the mid-chest, behind the breast bone, and in the mid-abdomen.4
- Most people can manage heartburn with lifestyle modifications and over-the-counter medications.1
- People with GERD may need newer, more powerful medications or even surgery to reduce symptoms.1
- Many children and some adults with GERD do not have heartburn; instead they have a dry cough, asthma symptoms, or trouble swallowing.4
