Medications used in the treatment of heartburn may include both over-the-counter and prescription medications. Antacids and acid blockers are available in over-the-counter formulations. Proton pump inhibitors, histamine receptor antagonists, and promotility agents are examples of types of medications that may be prescribed in the treatment of heartburn.
