Palpitations are heart sensations usually characterized by skipping, racing, or strong pounding of the heart. Occasional heart palpitations are often harmless and may only appear during stressful situations. However, heart palpitations may also be related to some cardiovascular conditions such as arrhythmias and valvular heart disease, which require further assessment and diagnostic procedures.
