Research Notes on Heart Palpitations and Menopause
One of the most common symptoms during menopause is hot flashes which are usually accompanied by heart palpitations.1 Palpitations are heart sensations usually characterized by skipping, racing, or strong pounding of the heart.2 Heart palpitations during menopause are generally considered a result of fluctuating hormones.3
Fast Facts:
- Heart palpitations are the second most common symptom in menopausal women.4
- Changes in estrogen or progesterone levels can cause the heart to pound aggressively or the body to sweat profusely.3
- Menopausal women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may also experience an increase in heart palpitations at the beginning of treatment.3
- Heart palpitations in menopausal women should be monitored by a physician to make sure that there are no underlying conditions such as mitral valve prolapse.5
