Research Notes on Heart Disease and Pregnancy
If you have heart disease, you should talk with your doctor before you get pregnant. Having congenital heart disease puts your child at a higher risk of having some type of heart defect.1 If you are pregnant with heart disease, you should take certain measures to ensure your health and that of your child. Before taking any medications, including over-the-counter drugs, get your doctor's approval.2 Pregnant women with heart disease should also refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol.2
Fast Facts:
- Some women develop arrhythmias and high blood pressure while pregnant.2
- During your pregnancy, your doctor may hear a heart murmur. This does not necessarily mean that there is anything wrong.2
- Approximately 1% of pregnancies are complicated by heart disease.1
- Treatment options for pregnant women with heart disease include bed rest, hospitalization, and medications.1
