Research Notes on Heart Disease and Latinas
Among Latinas, heart disease is the number one cause of death.1 Latinas have an increased risk of heart disease due to several factors, including obesity and diabetes. It is possible to lower the risk of developing heart disease by adapting a healthier lifestyle.1 This includes losing weight, exercising, and following a heart healthy diet.2
Fast Facts:
- To decrease the likelihood of developing heart disease, it is important to be aware of your blood glucose levels, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure.2
- If you smoke, quitting can reduce your chances of developing heart disease, stroke, and cancer.2
- If you have been diagnosed with heart disease, lowering high cholesterol and high blood pressure can significantly reduce your chances of dying of heart disease.1
