Research Notes on Heart Disease and Fish Oil
Studies show that fish oil (omega-3 fatty acid) can be beneficial in fighting heart disease. Fish oil prevents blood clots, decreases triglycerides, decreases LDL cholesterol, and increases HDL cholesterol. Some studies even suggest that fish oil lowers high blood pressure. It is recommended that people with heart disease eat two servings of fatty fish per week.1
Fast Facts:
- Eating at least one serving of fish per week could reduce the risk of heart attack by one third.2
- Salmon, herring, and tuna are the most beneficial types of fish to eat because they contain more omega-3 fatty acid.2
- Regularly eating a moderate amount of omega-3 fatty acid can decrease the risk of stroke by 50%.3
