Research Notes on Heart Disease Risk Factors
There are various factors that increase a person's risk of heart disease. Some risk factors such as smoking, high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, uncontrolled stress or anger, physical inactivity, and obesity are controllable. Uncontrollable risk factors for heart disease include age, race, family history of heart disease, and being post-menopausal.1 Certain conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure can also increase the risk of developing heart disease.2
Fast Facts:
- Having a parent or sibling that had a heart or circulatory problem before age fifty-five puts you at an increased risk of heart disease.3
- Four out of every five deaths due to heart disease occur in people over sixty-five years of age.3
- Women who are over thirty-five years of age are at an increased risk of heart disease if they smoke and use birth control pills.3
