Research Notes on Heart Disease Medications
There are various medications available to treat and prevent heart disease. Beta blockers are used to treat the symptoms of heart disease and high blood pressure.1 Beta blockers slow the heart causing your blood pressure to drop, and the heart to work less hard.1 Nitrates work to stop chest pain by relaxing the blood vessels. ACE inhibitors are usually prescribed following a heart attack.2
Fast Facts:
- Side effects from using heart disease medications include nausea, ulcers, decreased libido, and slow heart rate.1
- If you have already experienced a heart attack, your physician may use aspirin to lower your risk of having another heart attack.1
- Calcium channel blockers and diuretics are used to lower high blood pressure which can lead to the development of heart disease.2
