Heart Disease

There are many different forms of heart disease. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a condition that affects only the elderly. Some people are born with heart disease, while others slowly develop the disease over time. In the U.S., heart disease is the leading cause of death.1

Fast Facts:

  • Some different types of heart disease include cardiomyopathy, cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and hypertensive heart disease.2
  • Certain risk factors for heart disease can be controlled such as smoking, uncontrolled hypertension, obesity, and physical inactivity.3
  • Some risk factors cannot be controlled, including a family history of heart disease, race, gender (males are more susceptible to heart disease), and older age.3
  • In 2006, it was estimated that 80,000,000 people living in the U.S. had one or more forms of heart disease.4
