Research Notes on Heart Defects
Abnormalities in the heart's structure cause congenital heart defects that are present at birth.1 Roughly 8 out of every 1,000 newborns have mild to severe congenital heart defects.1 Congenital heart defects happen when incomplete or abnormal development of the fetus' heart occurs during the very early weeks of pregnancy.1
Fast Facts:
- Defects can involve the interior walls of the heart, valves inside the heart, or the arteries and veins.2
- Most heart defects are simple conditions that are easily fixed or need no treatment.2
- Most people with complex heart defects need special heart care throughout their lives.2
