The heart is a muscular organ that is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body through repeated, rhythmic contractions. It is composed of cardiac muscle as well as an involuntary muscle tissue which is only found in the heart.1 The heart will beat more than two and a half billion times in an average lifetime.2 About five quarts of blood are pumped each minute through the adult heart.3
