Research Notes on Hearing Impairment
Hearing impairment is a term used to describe a loss of hearing in one or both ears. Impairment can be mild, moderate, severe or profound. Conductive and sensorineural are the two types of hearing impairment.1 Mixed hearing loss is the combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing problems.2
Fast Facts:
- Each year in the United States, approximately 12,000 babies are born with significant hearing impairment.3
- The main cause of mild to moderate hearing impairment in children is chronic middle ear infection.1
- In 2005, the World Health Organization estimated 278 million people worldwide have moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears.1
